About Real Mk12 Rifle The Mk 12 rifle, officially designated the Mk 12 Special Purpose Rifle or SPR, was a semi-automatic designated marksman rifle used by United States Special Operations Forces. Developed in the late 1990s to fill the gap between the standard M4 carbine and larger, heavier 7.62mm sniper rifles like the SR-25, the Mk 12 was a purpose?built, highly accurate weapon system designed to engage targets at extended ranges. However, it was eventually type?classified as a complete, standalone weapon system, and the acronym SPR was redefined as Special Purpose Rifle. The Mk 12 officially entered service in 2002 and saw extensive combat during the Global War on Terror before being phased out around 2017. The rifles performance was tied directly to the Mk 262 ammunition, a 77 grain match?grade round designed for long?range accuracy and consistent terminal effect. The gas system was a rifle?length, direct impingement system, which contributed to smooth operation and reliability. For optics, the standard sight was a Leupold Mk 4 2.5?8x36mm scope, calibrated specifically for the 77 grain Mk 262 round fired from an 18inch barrel. There were three main production variants of the Mk 12, distinguished primarily by their handguards and ba
