About Real L85 AFV (Armoured Fighting Vehicle) Rifle The L85 AFV (Armoured Fighting Vehicle) Rifle is a compact variant of the British Army's standard-issue L85A2 assault rifle, specifically adapted for use by armored vehicle crews such as tank and infantry fighting vehicle personnel. Designed to address the spatial constraints inside cramped armored vehicles, this version retains the core functionality of the SA80 weapon family while incorporating modifications to enhance maneuverability in close-quarters environments. Unlike the standard L85A2, which features a full-length barrel and compatibility with an underslung grenade launcher, the AFV variant has a noticeably shorter barrel, improving handling in tight spaces. This reduction in length, however, comes at the cost of some ballistic performance, as the shorter barrel results in decreased muzzle velocity and effective range compared to its infantry counterpart. Additionally, the AFV model typically lacks the mounting point for the L17A2 underslung grenade launcher, further streamlining its design for vehicle crew use. The rifle maintains the bullpup layout characteristic of the SA80 series, with the magazine positioned behind the trigger to maximize barrel length within a compact frame. It chambers the standard 5.56?45mm NATO round and accepts the same 30-round STANAG magazines used by the L85A2, ensuring logistical compatibility across British forces.
