About Real AK74 The AK-74 is an assault rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in 1974. It is known for its association with the Soviet Union and has been widely used by various countries since the 1970s. The rifle is chambered for the 5.45×39mm cartridge, which replaced the earlier 7.62×39mm cartridge used in Kalashnikov's earlier automatic weapons. The AK-74 saw combat deployment with Soviet forces during the Afghanistan conflict starting in 1979. It is reported that the first AK-74 captured by the Afghan mujahideen during the Afghan-Soviet War was allegedly purchased by the CIA for $5,000, according to the head of the Afghan bureau of the ISI. Presently, many countries of the former Soviet Union continue to utilize the AK-74. Licensed copies of the rifle were also produced in Bulgaria (AK-74, AKS-74, and AKS-74U) and in the former East Germany (MPi-AK-74N, MPi-AKS-74N, MPi-AKS-74NK).
