In Japan, it is manufactured under license by MinebeaMitsumi Inc. and is known as the Minebea 9mm Pistol, serving as the standard-issue sidearm for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). Adopted in the late 1980s to replace older revolvers, the pistol is chambered in 9?19mm Parabellum, suitable for military and law enforcement use. The Japanese version closely follows the original SIG P220 design but includes localized modifications, such as specific markings and a lanyard ring for secure handling. It is primarily issued to officers, vehicle crew members, and personnel requiring a compact self-defense weapon, making it ideal for close-quarters combat and personal protection. The P220 operates using a short-recoil, locked-breech system and features a double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger mechanism.
