About 1911 M45A1 The 1911 M45A1 is a modernized military version of the classic M1911 pistol, specifically built for the United States Marine Corps. It is chambered in the powerful .45 ACP caliber and represents the final chapter of the M1911's official service life with the U.S. military. The story begins with the original M1911, invented by John Browning and adopted in 1911 for its superior stopping power, a lesson learned during the Philippine-American War. An updated version, the M1911A1, served as the standard U.S. military sidearm through both World Wars, Korea, and Vietnam, until it was largely replaced by the M9 Beretta in 1985. However, elite units within the Marine Corps, such as Force Reconnaissance, valued the .45 caliber's power and kept specially modified 1911s in service. The M45A1 was the formal, factory-produced successor to these hand-fitted pistols, known as the MEU(SOC) pistol. In 2012, after a competitive selection process, Colt Defense was awarded a contract to produce the new pistol, designating it the M45A1 Close Quarter Battle Pistol. While the M45A1 retains the classic look of the 1911, it incorporates significant 21st-century upgrades. It features a stainless steel frame with a durable, matte desert-tan Cerakote finish, a departure from the old carbon steel and blued finishes. For modern tactical needs, it includes an integrated Picatinny rail for attaching lights and lasers, high-profile Novak tritium night sights for low-light accuracy, and a dual recoil spring system to better manage recoil and extend the gun's service life. The pistol is also fitted with textured G10 composite grips in a desert camouflage pattern.
