About Real AKM Rifle The AKM (Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovanniy, meaning "Modernized Kalashnikov Automatic Rifle") is a 7.62?39mm assault rifle developed in the Soviet Union as an improved version of the AK-47. Introduced in 1959, it became one of the most mass-produced firearms in history, renowned for its reliability, simplicity, and widespread use in conflicts around the world. The AKM was designed to address some of the shortcomings of the AK-47, particularly in terms of weight and production efficiency. Instead of the AK-47?s heavier milled receiver, the AKM uses a lighter stamped steel receiver, reducing its weight from about 4.3 kg to approximately 3.15 kg. This change also made the rifle cheaper and faster to manufacture, allowing for greater distribution across Soviet forces and allied nations. One of the most recognizable features of the AKM is its slanted muzzle brake, which helps reduce recoil and muzzle climb during automatic fire, improving controllability. The rifle also incorporates minor but effective improvements, such as a redesigned trigger mechanism (featuring a hammer retarder to reduce rate of fire) and a more durable gas block. The AKM was widely exported and licensed for production in many countries, leading to numerous variants and copies, such as the Chinese Type 56, the Romanian PM md. 63, and the Hungarian AK-63. Folding-stock versions, like the AKMS, were developed for airborne troops and vehicle crews. Despite being officially replaced in Soviet service by the 5.45?39mm AK-74 in the 1970s, the AKM remains in widespread use today due to its ruggedness, ease of maintenance, and the vast number of surplus rifles available. Its legendary durability and straightforward design have made the AKM a symbol of insurgencies, revolutions, and military forces worldwide, appearing in nearly every major conflict since the 1960s. Whether in the hands of soldiers, guerrillas, or militias, the AKM continues to be one of the most influential firearm
