About Real XM177 Rifle The XM177 rifle is a compact carbine variant of the M16 rifle, developed by Colt during the Vietnam War to address the need for a lighter, more maneuverable firearm for special forces, airborne troops, and other personnel operating in close-quarters environments. Officially designated as the Colt Commando, the XM177 series was never fully standardized as an official U.S. military rifle, hence the "XM" (Experimental Model) prefix. The rifle was designed to offer the firepower of the standard M16 but in a significantly shorter package, making it ideal for jungle warfare and urban combat. It featured a shortened barrel, typically around 10 to 11.5 inches, and a collapsible stock to enhance portability. Early models, such as the XM177E1, were chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO but used a shorter 10-inch barrel with a unique moderator to reduce muzzle blast and flash, as the short barrel produced intense noise and visible signature. The later XM177E2 variant, which became more widely issued, incorporated an 11.5-inch barrel and an improved flash suppressor. Despite its advantages in compactness, the shorter barrel reduced muzzle velocity and effective range compared to the full-length M16. The XM177 series saw extensive use with U.S. Special Forces, including the Green Berets and Navy SEALs, as well as with helicopter crews and officers who needed a lightweight, easily carried weapon. Although the XM177 was never formally adopted as a standard-issue rifle, its design influenced later carbine developments, including the M4 Carbine. The rifle remains a notable piece of firearms history, appreciated for its role in special operations during the Vietnam War and its contribution to the evolution of modern compact military rifles.
